Campus Health Services


Goals
To provide services needed to resolve immediate, minor health problems so as to enable the student to continue with activities normally associated with studies at the College.

To provide up-to-date information on fundamental and preventive health education and health promotion.


The Health Care Centre
The clinic is centrally located at the Oakes Field Campus on the ground floor of the western wing in the Portia M. Smith Student Services Centre.

Clinic Hours
9:30 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday
9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Saturday
Closed on public holidays

Staff
The clinic is operated by three (3) experienced, Registered Nurses, one ful-time and two part-time, who have specialized training in Preventive Health. One is also a Health Education Specialist.

Additionally, referrals are made to other health care facilities/professionals when necessary.

Operations
Persons requiring treatment must be currently registered for courses at the College or employed by the College.

Prior to admission to the College, students are required to complete a College Medical Record, which includes the Physician's Examination Report.
As with all college records, health information is strictly confidential.

Available Services
  • Emergency First Aid Care for minor or major problems/accidents prior to transporting to a private or government health care facility, if necessary.
  • Checking of temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, when required.
  • Performance of basic lab tests: e.g. urine and blood glucose.
  • Eye irrigation and ear syringing.
  • Application of butterfly strip band-aids & dressings for minor cuts and lacerations.
  • Application of ace bandages for wrist, elbow, leg, or ankle injuries, as well as a splint or sling if needed.
  • Administration of non-prescription medication for common ailments such as headaches, colds, toothaches, and menstrual cramps.
  • Administration of prescribed medication/injections on the advice of a physician.
  • Provision of "sick slips" when necessary.
  • Provision of materials/information on preventive care and health education/health promotion.
Adult immunization services are offered at the Baillou Hill Road Clinic on Wednesdays during the hours of 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
