Student Development Seminars
What is Student Development Seminar (COUN001)?
The Student Development Seminar/Counselling 001 is a compulsory twelve-week orientation seminar. The seminar provides information about self-evaluation, study skills, learning styles, time management, stress management, and College policies. Students also gain experiential social learning through community placement exercise or self-enrichment and personal growth by attending Developmental Workshops/seminars.
Who Must Attend
It is a mandatory course for ALL full-time first year students. Students must register for this course within their 1st or 2nd semester.
Why is SDS Important?
International research shows that more than 60% of high school graduates go on to college. It also shows that 40% of the students who start 4-year colleges or universities never finish their degrees. The percentage is higher for those entering 2-year colleges like COB. Researchers have found that more than 50% will drop out within the first year. SDS/COUN001 will provide the support new students need to successfully complete their studies here at the College.

How to Successfully Complete Your Programme
- Advisement: Get proper advisement from your advisor or somone with in your department. Follow the sequence of courses as outlined by your advisor. DO NOT advise yourself.
- Attending Classes: Attend ALL classes and be on time.
- Absenteeism: Do not miss classes. If it cannot be helped, check with classmates or the lecturer for missed notes or assignments.
- Questions: Ask questions when you don't understand; remember, no question is a dumb one.
- Dropping/Adding Classes: Familiarize yourself with the Drop/Add procedure. It is better to drop a class than risk getting an "F" on your transcript.
- Reading Assignments: Read all assigned and outside reading materials prior to class.
- Additional Work: If you missed class-work or homework assignments, talk with your lecturer to see about making up the work.
- Note-Taking: Take good notes in each class.
- Library: Make good use of the library. Books, periodicals, and audiovisual resources. Return library books on time. (There are fines for late books and final grades are held until fines are paid.)
- Problems: Visit the Counselling Department on the top floor of the new Student Affairs Building if you have personal problems or other concerns.
- Tutoring: Don't fail courses when help is available. FREE Peer tutoring is available through the Counselling Department.
- Time Management: Plan to use your time wisely. Make up a schedule that includes: classes, study times for each course, mealtimes, and recreation time. BALANCE IS THE KEY. (Put time on you side)
