The New Library Project

In 1984 a 7,500sq.ft-extension was added to the old single three-room library boosting it to just a little over 10,000 sq. ft. At its opening, the new library was too small, as it was found to have just sufficient space to accommodate the existing collections from the merged holdings and staff of the Education and Soldier Road branches. The new library building provided little room for future collection growth. Within a few years, therefore, programming begun for a new library facility capable of supporting the long-term development of The College to University status, as well as serve as a conduit for dissemination of information resources to Bahamians in a globally competitive society.

The new 'state of the art' library building, a tripartite funded project by The Government of The Bahamas, the Lyford Cay Foundation and The College of The Bahamas, is planned for completion in late 2005. It is expected to be a national heritage monument, equipped to provide informational services to support curricula needs, excellence in teaching and learning, scholarly research, and community-based cultural programmes. Through its expanded technological connectivity, varied collections and other informational resources the captivating structure will foster innovation, creativity, cultural awareness and appreciation. The $15-million, 60,000 sq. ft. facility, will be the signature building on campus inviting and inspiring current and future researchers in their quests for knowledge and information by and about Bahamians, and the global community in which we exist.

A new library building will provide:
  • Quality, comfortable study places in a pleasant environment
  • Meeting places for collaboration between groups, and for individual contemplation and reflection
  • Access to attractively packaged information resources in varying formats
  • Archive space for storing and accessing College historical records and research materials produced by academic staff
  • Research and cultural centre promoting Bahamian heritage through educational and informational programming
Funding
The realisation of a technologically equipped library requires the concerted effort by the entire community, the beneficiaries of the facility. Your contribution will support the building of a community of local scholars, an informed citizenry, and the creation and invention of products and services to restore confidence in a declining economy.
COB's Fundraising Goals
  • To collect 1 million dollars for long-term maintenance of the facility
  • To raise 2.5 million dollars for furniture, fixtures, and equipment
