First Honours Society At College
Students waiting to be inducted into the Alpha Sigma Pi National Society of Leadership and Success
Fifty-four students were inducted into The College's first Honours Society on January 23rd, 2008, in a pleasantly informal ceremony outside the Portia Smith Student Services Building.
President Hodder made a short speech in which she welcomed the presence of an honours society at The College and Adrian Forsythe, newly-elected Chapter President, welcomed the inductees and their family members to the ceremony.
Lottis Shearer, Acting Director President's Scholars and Honours Programmes, said, "We have been looking for leadership opportunities for students that can be combined with academic success and the Alpha Sigma Pi National society of Leadership and Success fitted the bill perfectly." She sees this as the beginning of bringing more honours societies onto campus.
The vision of the Alpha Sigma Pi society is to create a community where like-minded, success oriented individuals can come together to learn from and support each other. It provides leadership workshops online and provides seven speaker presentations on campus per year. The College of The Bahamas students will be able to watch these presentations via DVDs.
First Honours Society At College
Miss Monique Poitier-Sherman, Chapter member from Northern Bahamas Campus, makes closing remarks.
In addition, the society provides seven training modules on topics such as, setting personal goals and succeeding in achieving them, career development and maximizing your ability.
To further develop the society, an administrative officer will visit The Bahamas in February to assist in the organization and provide support mechanisms.
The basic criterion to become a member of Alpha Sigma Pi is a 3.0 GPA; those students with a 3.3 GPA are granted Presidential status and receive special recognition. Over a thousand letters of invitation were mailed to students - fifty-four have accepted the invitation.
