Library Assistant Completes Master's Degree
Library Assistant Antoinette Pinder has recently returned to The College after spending 15 months in Philadelphia completing her Master's Degree in Library & Information Science with an emphasis on higher education. Antoinette studied at the highly ranked Drexel University College of Information Science and Technology, a school that specializes in preparing librarians for the 21st Century and she is one of a number of staff members who have taken advantage of the professional development opportunities The College has made available.
"Studying at Drexel was very cutting-edge," Antoinette told us, "and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to do so much from in front of my computer screen. I liked the fact that Drexel pushed me beyond my limits because that meant I became very computer savvy and improved my computer skills considerably. There is also a very effective mentoring system there and I would love to be a part of something like that here at COB."
Already possessing a Bachelor's Degree in Communications and Applied Technology, Antoinette intentionally chose a programme that would be useful as far as technical services and electronic resources were concerned. "I want to be able to fully immerse myself in the operations of the forthcoming Virtual Library," she explained. "The possibility of being able to access databases, electronic books, websites and links from anywhere is very exciting and I want to be able to fully assist the students so they can see everything at a glance and make their research experiences more exciting."
Libraries have always been very innovative and ready to embrace technology into their operations. At Drexel there are library stations for borrowing and returning books where no staff interaction is needed and Antoinette is confident that The College's new Harry C Moore Library that is now being constructed will introduce similar procedures when it opens.
"When I got back at the beginning of this semester, I was quite surprised at the progress the college has made towards getting the new library built and moving on to university status," Antoinette stated, "and I'm glad I came back when I did because I want to be right here to fit myself into all this excitement."
