17 April 2009
College of The Bahamas Culinary & Hospitality Management Institute (CHMI) faculty and staff combined with The Bahamas Hotel Association to advise representatives from International casino and hotel chain, DIVI, one of the largest operations on St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, on the best way to proceed with setting up hospitality training facilities for Virgin Islanders.
DIVI has made a commitment to the government of the Virgin Islands to assist with the implementation of educational hospitality studies on the island and, having heard of the success of The Bahamas Hotel Training College (BHTC) and CHMI, came to hear about how hospitality studies got started in The Bahamas and what has been done over the years to continue the training and development of Bahamians for the industry.
Susan Varnes, President, Treasure Bay VI Corp. Biloxi Mississippi, and Anton Kuipers, General Manager, Divi Carina Bay Casino, St Croix, USVI, spent time with experts from CHMI garnering information and expertise regarding establishing hospitality training and educational opportunities for the people of St Croix. Later they spoke with representatives from The Bahamas Hotel Association discussing the importance of networking and collaborating with partners.
At the end of the day, the parties had put together a practical plan of action that describes a way forward for hospitality studies in the US Virgin Islands.
CHMI personnel anticipate they will be called upon to provide assistance on the ground in St. Croix in the future to assist in the full implementation of the projected programme.
