The School of English Studies at The College of The Bahamas will host the fourth annual Anatol Rodgers Memorial Lecture Series with special guest, world-renowned Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott.

Winner of the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature, Walcott was born in 1930 in St. Lucia. He is the founder of the Trinidad Theater Workshop and throughout his illustrious career has produced numerous prize-winning plays, poems and essays including his Nobel Prize speech The Antilles: Fragments of Epic Memory (1992), Omeros (1990), Tiepolo's Hound (2000), The Prodigal (2005), Dream on Monkey Mountain (1967) and Ti-Jean and His Brothers (1957).

"Art, Politics and Caribbean Culture: an Evening with Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott" will take attendees on a cultural journey with one of the Caribbean's most noted poets, playwrights and scholars. This event will attract literary and cultural enthusiasts from The College and the wider community.

The Anatol Rodgers Memorial Lecture Series will be held at The College of The Bahamas Performing Arts Centre, Oakes Field on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. In addition, immediately following the event, Walcott will have a book signing. The public is invited to attend this free event.

"It is truly an honour for The College to have Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott as our special guest for this year's Anatol Rodgers Memorial Lecture Series," said Dr. Marjorie Brooks-Jones, Chair of the School of English Studies. "One of the most prolific writers of our time, Walcott represents the very best of Caribbean artistry, intellectual achievement and culture. His visit to The College is a once in a lifetime opportunity not to be missed."

The lecture series is named in honour of the late Anatol Rodgers who contributed to the development of education in The Bahamas from 1933-1975, and who was the third Bahamian and first female principal of The Government High School (1971-1975). Although she taught a variety of subjects during her professional life, Mrs. Rodgers' first love was English. The series is supported by private giving from Dr. Jonathan Rodgers and members of the Rodgers family.

The School of English Studies has featured several well-known scholars and writers in its annual lecture series, including Haitian American scholar and author, Joanne Hyppolite (2005); Guyanese poet, novelist, playwright and professor, Fred D'Aguiar (2006); Professor of English and Director of the Institute of Caribbean Studies at UWI, Mona, Dr. Carolyn Cooper (2007); and Ghanaian writer, university professor and 2009 Emmy award winner for his multi-media project Hope: Living and Loving with HIV in Jamaica, Kwame Dawes (2008).
