Dr. Kelley Duncanson Assumes Leadership of Northern Bahamas Campus
10 September 2009
Former School of Business faculty member Dr. Kelley Duncanson has been appointed Associate Vice President (AVP), Northern Bahamas Campus (NBC), assuming leadership at an exciting phase of development for the campus but a challenging period for the wider community still grappling with an economic malaise.
The appointment took effect August 1, 2009.
College President Ms. Janyne Hodder made the announcement at a press conference at the Northern Bahamas Campus.
"Dr. Duncanson, who is already known to some of you as a faculty member of our School of Business since 2007, brings a very special energy and drive to college leadership and to this campus," said Ms. Hodder.
"We are increasingly acting, behaving and graduating students the way a university would and in this campus we are also moving to a new home later on in this academic year and it was very important to us that we identify leadership that we felt projected the confidence, openness, experience and drive that we expect to see associated with the University of The Bahamas Northern Campus," she added.
Dr. Duncanson's appointment followed a rigorous selection process during which 23 candidates were interviewed for the AVP position.
"I am aware that several highly qualified persons applied for this position, so for me to be selected, it is very humbling indeed," said Dr. Duncanson.
The holder of a Ph.D. in Management with a minor in Economics from Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. Duncanson's primary research interests include decision support systems, simulated learning, student budgeting and personal finance, organizational behaviour and student learning techniques.
Dr. Duncanson has published scholarly articles in the Business Research Yearbook, Global Business Perspectives and presented papers at the International Academy of Business and Economics and the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS) conferences. She is also a former consultant for management and accounting systems.
As a priority, she intends to establish more opportunities for faculty involved research, training and information sharing. In addition, she would like to place greater emphasis on student development.
"I am very pro-student and I want to make sure that they follow their dreams, graduate and work in an area that brings them joy," she said.
The College's Northern Bahamas Campus offers bachelor degree programmes in the schools of Business and Education and associate degrees in Culinary Arts and Hospitality Operations in addition to a number of continuing education courses. There are plans to expand the academic offerings.
"The key challenge for Dr. Duncanson will be to assist Grand Bahama in defining an economic and social future that will benefit the community. Then work to design and develop the degree programmes that will give all Grand Bahamians a capacity to compete and to rebuild their economy," said President Hodder.
Dr. Duncanson succeeded Dr. Coralee Kelly who had held the position for more than six years. During Dr. Kelly's tenure, ground was broken for the new Northern Bahamas Campus under construction in East, Grand Bahama, with the first phase scheduled to be completed in January 2010. Dr. Kelly has returned to the School of Education as an Associate Professor.
