18 February 2008
Twenty-two high flying students in the School of Business will be attending the prestigious Nassau Conference thanks to generous sponsorship from the conference's corporate sponsors. The students, three of whom attended the press conference to announce the sponsorship, were chosen from among the School of Business' best students and those in attendance all expressed their gratitude to their sponsors and their enthusiasm for attending the conference which will take place on February 26th, 2008.
The Nassau Conference is organized annually by the Association of International Banks and Trust Companies in The Bahamas (AIBT). It brings together a number of specialized professionals to address a broad range of issues and opportunities facing the jurisdiction and its financial services industry. Last year College of The Bahamas students were sponsored to attend for the first time.
"AIBT recognizes that our future growth and development are very much dependent on attracting more and younger Bahamians to consider careers in the sector," said AIBT Chairman Jan Mezulanik. "As a result we structured our sponsorship packages to allow our corporate sponsors to cover the cost of one or more students to attend the event."
President Janyne M Hodder told the organizers, "It is very gratifying to know that the Association of International Banks and Trust Companies in The Bahamas feels such confidence in The College of The Bahamas and the caliber of students that we are producing that it has again found sponsorship for them for its Nassau Conference. Last year there were 20 – this year 22, and I am delighted to know that College of The Bahamas students will be able to attend the Conference and hear experts in the world of financial services present on topics that will impact our country's second industry."
Wendy Warren highlighting the need for the financial services sector to attract talented young Bahamians watched by President Janyne M Hodder; Jan Mezulanik, Chairman of The Association of International Banks and Trust Companies in the Bahamas (AIBT); and Andrew Law, Chairman Nassau Conference.
"Exposure to events such as the Nassau Conference is extremely important in the overall education of our students and we want to try to make such exposure a possibility for as many of our students as we can. We should never underestimate the impact that conferences, seminars and visiting speakers have on our students and I know the 22 young people who will attend the conference on February 26th will take from it information that will make a big difference in the way they both view their futures and their understanding of the world of finance."
Andrew Law, chairman of the Nassau Conference, advised the students to take full advantage of the opportunity to not only gain further insights into international finance but to also introduce themselves to their sponsors and to look for possible employment opportunities.
Wendy Warren, Chief Executive Officer of the Bahamas Financial Services Board and herself a proud alumna of The College of The Bahamas, echoed Mr Law's comments and also spoke of the need to nurture young talent in the financial services sector.
The Nassau Conference will feature panels and presentations on Trust Administration, Competition among Trust Jurisdictions and The Effects of Exchange Controls on Capital Markets.
