New Relief Sculpture Adorns Wall of S Block

25 November 2008

Students, staff and faculty walking across the Oakes Field campus will have a new three dimensional relief sculpture to look at as they pass S block. Members of Sue Bennett-Williams' Art: 104 class have created the sculpture in the style of Russian-born American Abstract Expressionist Sculptor, Louise Nevelson, a revered figure in the world of sculpture in the United States. She created innovative sculptures made of found wooden objects and Ms Bennett-Williams' class has followed a similar purpose. The result replaces the orange and blue sculpture that was on the wall.

The sculpture is a three-dimensional collection of monochromatic, black wooden boxes containing wooden shapes, linked together and affixed to the wall. Freshman Rashad Adderley explained that each box represents one students' work and the piece is the final project for the semester. Although there is no overarching theme to the piece, Mr Adderley explained that the work has a unity through its materials and colour.

The wall has been painted a deep red to contrast dramatically with the black of the boxes and, according to John Cox, Assistant Professor in the Art Department, the work will probably remain on the wall for the remainder of the academic year.
