Vanessa Gibson, a biology with chemistry major in her final year at The College of The Bahamas, has become the recipient of the first The Bahamas Dental Association Book Award. The award, given in memory of Drs Hal Leyland and Cleveland Eneas, is for $3,000.00 with $1,000.00 going to Vanessa and the other $2,000.00 earmarked to begin an endowment fund which will benefit students with a financial need who are studying natural sciences.
This is the beginning of a five year commitment from The Bahamas Dental Association and three of its executive officers, President Dr Andre Rollins, Vice-President Dr Ricardo Crawford and Treasurer Dr Joy Pickstock, were present to assist in the presentation of the award to Vanessa.
Cheryl Carey, Director of Financial Aid & Housing, was also present and she spoke in glowing terms of Vanessa as a student with a real community spirit and a young lady who lives to serve. Development Associate Yolanda Darville, who organized the presentation, was especially happy that the donors were able to meet Vanessa as she feels it is important that donors know who receives their awards.
Vanessa expressed her gratitude to The Bahamas Dental Association saying that the cheque would help her greatly in her final year and Dr Rollins stated that he felt sure their award was in good hands and wished Vanessa every success in the future.
