Marjorie Brooks-Jones Appointed Dean, Liberal and Fine Arts

An experienced educator and higher education administrator whose career spans more than 27 years, Dr. Marjorie Brooks-Jones has been appointed Dean, Faculty of Liberal and Fine Arts effective June 1st, 2011.

Dr. Brooks-Jones will have portfolio responsibilities for the schools of English Studies and Communication and Creative Arts. She will report directly to the Office of the President.

The Dean plays a vital role in fostering the core values of The College of The Bahamas and represents The College in key institutional and national capacities. As Dean, Faculty of Liberal and Fine Arts, she will be responsible for strategic planning, curricular leadership at the undergraduate level, programme growth and development, systematic programme review and evaluation and faculty advocacy. Specific duties will include facilitating the delivery of academic programmes, monitoring full-time and part-time faculty workloads, evaluating student enrolment and retention in the schools under her portfolio, promoting alumni relations and supporting the advancement of fund-raising and major gift campaigns.

Dr. Brooks-Jones first joined The College in 1975 as a lecturer and initially served as a faculty member at The College for five years. She later rejoined The College in 1992 and attained the rank of Associate Professor in English in 2005. Over the years, she has held strategic academic leadership positions including Coordinator of the BA in English Programme. In 2007, she was appointed Chair of the School of English Studies with responsibility for the supervision of faculty, staff and students, ensuring faculty compliance with College policies and the industrial agreement, developing and implementing guidelines and procedures for the efficient operation of the School and coordinating the development and delivery of new courses, programmes and projects.

She has served as co-editor of several signature College of The Bahamas publications including Lucayos, Journal of the School of English Studies; Tamarind student journal and College of The Bahamas Anthology. Recently, she co-guest edited the Bahamian Literature issue of Anthurium , the University of Miami's e-journal dedicated to Caribbean literature and culture. Dr. Brooks-Jones presented at the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2010 on "Crossing the Bar: Navigations of Identity in Telcine Turner Rolle's Woman Take Two and Ian Strachan's Diary of Souls" ; the 25th Annual West Indian Literature Conference in Trinidad and Tobago in 2006 on "Where is Here? Remapping the Caribbean" and the Caribbean Women's Writers Alliance Conference in the United Kingdom in 2001 on "Rewriting Empire: From Colonialism Incorporated in Mary Seacole's Wonderful Adventures in Many Lands to Michelle Cliff's Project of Decolonisation in No Telephone to Heaven."

Under Dr. Brooks-Jones leadership, The College of The Bahamas launched the School of English Studies Distinguished Lecture Series in 2005, subsequently renamed the Anatol Rodgers Memorial Lecture Series, which has featured renowned scholars and artists including Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott; author, poet and musician Kwame Dawes and author and professor Fred D'Aguiar.

Dr. Brooks-Jones holds a Doctor of Philosophy in English, a Master of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in Community College Teaching in English from the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. She was twice honoured by the University of Miami in her graduate and undergraduate programmes with the Award for Academic Excellence. Dr. Brooks-Jones also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from the University of Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Profoundly committed to community development and youth empowerment, Dr. Brooks-Jones continues to provide support of the creative arts, in particular, the literary arts. She is a facilitator of the Bahamas Writers Summer Institute and has acted as an advisor to the Commonwealth Writers of The Bahamas organization. She is also a past board member of Special Olympics Bahamas Inc. and supports a number of organizations in a private capacity.
