College of The Bahamas Students awarded Canadian Government Scholarships

This spring semester will prove to be a very exciting one for two College of The Bahamas students who have been awarded Canadian Government scholarships for exchange opportunities in Canada. Bianca Dean, a junior studying business administration, and Dennise Newton, a senior in tourism and hospitality management, have both been awarded $10, 000.00 to facilitate their attending two of Canada's top universities.

The College is striving to improve the student experience by offering, among other things, opportunities for studying abroad while they continue to graduate from The College of The Bahamas. It is pursuing a vigorous agenda for internalization to develop partnerships that will create sustainable and mutually beneficial relationships and academic experiences.

Already a number of exchange agreements have been established and students have spent successful semesters at the University of Rhode Island and on teaching practice in Ohio.

"This is a part of the deep transformation we are going through here at The College of The Bahamas," stated President Janyne M Hodder. "Partnering in initiatives such as this builds an institution and strengthens partnerships."

The delighted students, who went through a rigorous screening process on the way to gaining the scholarships, were selected from twenty applicants. Valdez Russell, International Relations Liaison at The College of The Bahamas, explained that students from both the Northern Bahamas and Nassau campuses had been interviewed and that he was confident two solid students had been chosen to participate in the study abroad programme.

Ms Dean will spend the spring semester at St. Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia, while Ms Newton, will complete her academic experience at Holland College located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Both expressed their gratitude to the Canadian Government and thanked The College for allowing them to take part in what they both feel will be a life changing experience. Dean explained that she will be an Ambassador for The College and, indeed, The Bahamas. She added that she was elated that the study abroad programme had been implemented while she was still a student at The College.

President Hodder added, "This as an opportunity for College of The Bahamas students to study abroad and to graduate from The College. This is not an occasion for students to be recruited from the Caribbean and sent to Canada to complete their academic experience there. It is another example that you can come to The College of The Bahamas and see the world."

She explained further, "This initiative is a part of a programme that exists when both universities have a relationship. Therefore, these awards will only be offered to students by institutions with whom The College has a partnership."

The Government of Canada offers scholarships as a part of the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Programme to recognize Canadian publicly funded universities. The programme is designed to encourage Canadian universities and colleges to develop or expand their exchange programmes with eligible countries such as The Bahamas.
