The College of The Bahamas and the United Haitian Association in The Bahamas (UHAB) are collaborating in an effort to improve ties between The College and the Haitian Community. Both parties hope that this partnership will lead to improved relations between Bahamians and Haitians.
The first act of this collaboration will see four of The College's security officers sponsored by UHAB to attend Haitian Creole classes at the International Languages and Cultures Institute (ILCI) of The College.
The four members of The College's Security Department are looking forward expectantly to the chance to learn some Creole. They see it as a means of enhancing their communication capabilities when they come into contact with members of the Haitian community who attend classes or come to events at The College of The Bahamas.
Mr Mark Desmangles and Mr Michael Telerin, members of UHAB, both spoke of the outstanding contributions The College of The Bahamas has made to increasing awareness of Haitian culture and the positive impact it has on the Bahamian way of life. Mr Desmangles remembered the selfless work done by the College's security personnel when UHAB held its 2006 Flag Day Celebrations on the grounds of The College and Mr Telerin expressed his commitment to making this collaboration work "for the betterment of the entire population of The Bahamas".
UHAB has worked closely with ILCI in the past by providing Haitian films to be screened as part of the institute's ongoing cultural evenings. Last semester ILCI offered three Haitian Creole courses which were very well subscribed.
On May 17th, UHAB will begin its 2008 Flag Day celebrations with a parade from RM Bailey Park that will end at The College of The Bahamas Band Shell. There will follow a cultural connection through love, peace and unity that will feature Haitian arts and food, fun activities and games, and Haitian music.
