3 November 2008

The College of The Bahamas continues to strengthen international partnerships in Canada and in October 2008, Vice President for Research, Graduate Programmes and International Relations, Dr. Linda Davis, signed Memorandums of Understanding with Holland College (HC) and The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). The agreements were signed in Prince Edward Island during Dr Davis's annual fall visit and provide the framework for continued research collaborations, faculty, staff and student exchanges, along with other academic and cultural engagements. The relationships between The College of The Bahamas and these two Canadian institutions have existed for the past 18-months and have been mutually beneficial.

During the signing ceremony, Dr Davis expressed her satisfaction with the college's new partners. "Holland College and The University of Prince Edward Island represent the kinds of relationship that The College/University of The Bahamas is pleased to count among its partnerships."

Holland College and The University of Prince Edward Island have already received exchange students from The Bahamas and faculty have been actively engaged in scholarly conversations. Discussions with the University of Prince Edward Island have involved the joint delivery of courses in the areas of marine biology and tropical botany while College of The Bahamas students have also participated in academic course offerings with UPEI students. The Holland College partnership focuses on strategic areas of national development and Dr Davis stated, "We have identified four strategic areas of focus which we feel will permit growth in mutually beneficial areas --paramedicine, culinary and hospitality studies, maritime studies and policing studies--areas in which Holland brings a rich tradition and in which The College/University of The Bahamas stands to reap rich reward."

The agreement with Holland College was witnessed by His Excellency Michael Smith, Bahamas High Commissioner to Canada, and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Elliston Greenslade, himself an alumnus of The College of The Bahamas, who were in Prince Edward Island on an official visit.
