College of The Bahamas officials lead by President Janyne Hodder escorted Minister of Education Carl Bethel and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Elma Garraway on a tour of the construction site of the $28 million Harry C. Moore Library & Information Centre on Monday, November 17, 2008.
The project is one of the central capital works projects being undertaken at the College of The Bahamas, as the institution remains focused on its quest to become the University of The Bahamas. The library construction site is located on the College's Oakes Field campus at the corner of Tucker Road and Thompson Boulevard.
President Hodder and Minister Bethel leading the party around the site. Behind the leaders are Executive Vice-President Rhonda Chipman-Johnson, Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Education, Elma Garraway, Melanie Roach, Vice President Student Affairs Colyn Major and Director of Libraries and Instructional Media Services, Willamae Johnson.
Construction on the library began in May 2008 and has progressed significantly; the foundations have been laid and the ground floor columns and ground beams are firmly in place while the walls are now clearly visible. The project should take approximately 24 months to complete.
The library, which will extend over 48,000 square feet, will house support offices, a small auditorium, classrooms, media production studio, individual group and study spaces, institutional archives and exhibition spaces. There are also plans to feature a Special Collections Room with specific spaces for museum quality exhibitions including one commemorating the life and legacy of the late Sir Lynden O. Pindling.
President Hodder and Minister Bethel deep in conversation about the library.
Minister Bethel spoke enthusiastically about the significance and importance of the library to The College and the country, saying how thrilled he was to be able to tell his children that the building becoming visible at the junction of Tucker Road and Thompson Boulevard was the soon to be University of The Bahamas' Library.
The Minister will return shortly to view some of the other capital projects that are in development, such as the Performing Arts Centre and the renovated laboratories for the new pharmacy programme, and one that has been completed, the Wellness Centre.
