27 October 2011
Students from The College of The Bahamas and local high schools flocked to the Band Shell on the Oakes Field campus of the College on Thursday, October 27, 2011 in celebration of the School of English Studies' (SES) second annual English in the Park event.
English in the Park was created to stimulate an awareness of the many career options available to those who pursue a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English or a Minor in Drama and Film, Bahamian and Caribbean Literature or Linguistics.
Coordinator for the event, Chair of the School of English Studies, Dr. Helean McPhee was pleased with the level of interest and participation from COB students and neighbouring schools.
"English in the Park was a huge success. Some fifty students representing five senior high schools participated in the event, and as we anticipated, the planned activities were very well received by them. There was fierce competition among schools," explained Dr. McPhee.
Randysha Hanna of C.R. Walker Senior High won the Spelling Bee, Valene Rolle of Aquinas College won the Jeopardy competition and Winnae Hunt of COB won the Open Mic competition. Ashantae Gardiner of C.C. Sweeting won the surprise gift.
The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) generously donated cell phones for the first place winners and phone cards for second and third place winners of the competitions.
