The College of The Bahamas broke ground on Thursday, June 10th for its proposed Graduate Business Centre that will bear the name of businessman and former College Council Chairman Franklyn R. Wilson, The College's largest individual donor. The centre's main lecture theatre, anticipated to be the academic hub of the building, will be named for RBC Royal Bank of Canada, The College's largest corporate donor.
Once completed, the facility will house the Faculty of Business including both graduate and undergraduate schools of business and will become the nucleus of graduate studies in key aspects of Business, supporting the institution's expanded academic programme in areas including: Management, Accounting, Banking & Finance and Human Resources. The centre will offer programmes that are a competitive alternative to those offered at overseas institutions, helping to retain local, professional talent.
At a projected cost of approximately $4 million, the project is being funded through both public and private contributions. In March 2007, The College announced a $1 million commitment from Franklyn and Sharon Wilson. In January 2008 a matching $1 million gift from the Royal Bank of Canada was announced. The government has allocated another $2 million towards the capital budget for the project. The three-storey $4M building will house a large state-of-the art lecture theatre along with modern classrooms, a student computer lab, student and faculty lounge spaces and faculty office spaces.
College President Janyne M. Hodder addresses the ground breaking ceremony for The College's F. R. Wilson Graduate Business Centre.
College President Janyne M. Hodder lauded the philanthropic leadership of the Wilsons and the Royal Bank of Canada. "This new building demonstrates the powerful impact that private giving is having on the landscape and development of The College. I could not be happier today, in celebrating the impact of the philanthropy of RBC and the Wilsons."
The F R. Wilson Graduate Business Centre is a priority capital project for The College. It will be constructed on a parcel of land on Tucker Road adjacent to The College's Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute and in close proximity to the existing School of Business and the new Harry C. Moore Library & Information Centre, scheduled for an official fall 2010 opening. Construction of the centre will begin in the 2010-2011 academic year.
Businessman and former College Council Chairman Franklyn Wilson, after whom the Graduate Business Centre will be named, said he was humbled by the honour.
A longtime supporter of The College of The Bahamas, Mr. Wilson is a firm believer in the institution's capacity to produce top talent and contribute to the growth and development of The Bahamas. "The Graduate Business Centre must be a pivotal instrument for the realization of the best dreams of this country. I am humbled that The College deems it appropriate to associate my name with this facility," he said.
The realistion of the new centre would not be possible without RBC Royal Bank of Canada, The College's largest corporate donor with a century long legacy of corporate responsibility to The Bahamas. Ross McDonald, Head of Caribbean banking shared, "We are pleased to be a part of this historic moment for The College. The graduate business centre will have a lasting impact for years to come, allowing COB to attract the brightest students to study in business fields that are key to the further development of The Bahamas."

In fall 2010, The College will mark another significant and related milestone with the launch of its very own graduate programme – the Master of Business Administration [MBA] which will be housed in the F. R. Wilson Graduate Business Centre once the facility is completed. The College has offered seven graduate degrees in partnership with other institutions. The anticipated MBA programme, is uniquely crafted and was developed after extensive engagement with leading organizations in a broad range of professional disciplines. It will offer specialty tracks in entrepreneurship and innovation; leadership and financial decision-making. Future MBA graduates will form a network of the most skilled professionals in the country, opening doors of opportunity and creating competitive advantages.
These developments are especially important as The College continues to help build a population of highly skilled and educated citizens trained in professional areas of greatest need with the capacity to create innovative solutions and drive national development.
