Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders in the Caribbean

Mitesha Nottage

Shaveka Cleare

Two College of The Bahamas students, Mitesha Nottage and Shaveka Cleare, spent two weeks earlier in the summer at the University of the US Virgin Islands (UVI) as part of the Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders in the Caribbean. The two students were both members of the Emerging Leaders Programme at The College and had maintained a 3.00 GPA which led to programme director Lottis Shearer's recommending them to apply for the conference.

The University of the US Virgin Islands Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders is an intensive two-week leadership development course that focuses on the global business environment, leadership for tomorrow and culture and communication. This year an added focus was the problem of climate change and ways to address the issue in this era of globalization. The Institute's intention is to provide a foundation for developing and nurturing future leaders in the region by providing the skills necessary to assume future leadership roles in environments that are being shaped by global market forces, revolutionary technology and communication.

Mitesha and Shaveka were both full of praise for the two week summer institute as it provided strategies needed for organizing their thoughts into personal missions, visions and goals and approaches to succeeding in achieving those goals. They also both agreed that it had been a life-changing experience in many ways.

"The conference has changed me," stated Shaveka. "I am not the same person I was before I started the programme. I now feel confident to assume significant leadership responsibilities in my society."

While Mitesha added, "It truly changed my perspective toward leadership, myself and life in general. I realized that effective leaders recognize that what they know is little in comparison to what they still need to learn. My life was given greater meaning and purpose and I have definitely experienced personal growth." Both are now setting their sights high: Mitesha wants to become an endocrinologist specializing in diabetes treatment and to start a scholarship fund for students in the healthcare field, while Shaveka aspires to becoming a heart surgeon, to open up a heart hospital for the Caribbean and become Minister of Health.

Both young women feel well-equipped to apply what they learnt now they are back studying again. Mitesha is in her first year at the medical school at UWI and Shaveka has returned for her final year of bio-chemistry at The College of The Bahamas. "With regard to the workplace, it is important to develop a capacity to adapt to changing demands," believes Mitesha, "and at UWI, I am again amongst a diversity of cultures and I'm beginning to appreciate the importance of being exposed to different people and cultures, in order to be able to function in a Caribbean environment."

Shaveka has already started strategizing more since returning to The College this semester. "I feel I can go out there and claim a leadership position as I am more organized and disciplined because I now know what I want to do," she explained. The opportunities to interact with other delegates from all around the region were also greatly appreciated by the two Bahamians. Both have forged friendships which they are maintaining through Facebook and other technological communication tools, having appreciated that the social aspects of the programme were as important as the formal classroom experiences.

They were also impressed by the visiting speakers who came to share their perspectives on the art of and need for effective leaders in the region at this time. Among those who presented were La Verne Ragster, President UVI; Terrence Todman, former US ambassador to Chad, Costa Rica, Spain, Denmark and Argentina; Ruth Dancia Penn, Deputy Premier British Virgin Islands; and Minister Louis Farrakhan, National Representative of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and The Nation of Islam.

All in all, the two young women enjoyed a momentous experience and both unhesitatingly recommended the Global Leaders Institute for prospective leaders at The College of The Bahamas.
