College of The Bahamas Athletics Director, Greg Harshaw, has been named National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA)AstroTurf International Athletics Director of the Year. He received his award at the James J Corbett Awards Luncheon at NACDA's 43rd Annual Convention in Dallas, Texas, earlier this month.
This award underscores the significance of some of the recent achievements of The College's Athletics Programme, which under Harshaw's leadership has undergone a very significant transformation, including the institution's membership in one of the US' key collegiate athletic conferences. "We have made great strides in the last three years," he explains. "We have established ourselves in the eyes of the region and the United States by joining the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Conference and this award means that my peers appreciate the work and effort that has gone into promoting and developing the programme."
In the coming 2008-2009 academic year, The College of The Bahamas men and women's basketball and soccer teams will travel to Florida, Texas and Georgia, where they will compete against other colleges and universities in the conference. The track and field teams however will compete mainly against Florida based institutions. In October, The College also expects to send golfers to Prince Edward Island for competition against Canada's Holland College.
The programme that Harshaw has instituted is in many ways a pioneering model for regional athletics. It is the first time that a non-US programme has been granted full membership in a US intercollegiate athletics programme. "I hope," Greg adds, "that it will prove to be a model to be copied."
Greg's achievement is especially significant for The College of The Bahamas. It is the kind of endorsement that will enhance the College's local recruitment efforts and further promote the Athletics Programme as a viable alternative to student-athletics abroad.
"The College got great exposure," states Greg. "I was on the stage with Athletics Directors from colleges like Princeton, UCLA and Notre Dame and over two thousand others in the audience, and they heard the name College of The Bahamas Athletics Programme. It started quite a buzz and already I've had enquiries from athletics directors about coming down to play."
NACDA is the professional and educational association for more than 6,100 college athletics administrators at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
