Honour the Hunger

College President, Dr. Betsy V. Boze celebrates with honour students from the School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions.

21 November 2011

If you want to stay on top, stay hungry but don't get too full of yourself. That's the sage advice that Elder Marvin Duncombe, BEd, '03 gave honour roll students at The College of The Bahamas Honours Convocation on Friday, November 11th.

The path to continued success is quite simple, according to Elder Duncombe, himself an honour roll student at The College.

"The Principals List and the Deans List is no parking zone. You have to keep on moving. Your country needs your heads, your hearts and both of your hands. We need every part of you," he said.

"In the name of progress, get yourself off the Presidents list and off the Deans list and enlist in the service of nation building....You've got to become hungry for knowledge."

Hundreds of COB students attained at least a 3.00 GPA for the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters earning them placement on the Deans and Presidents honour rolls. The College paid tribute to their distinction by presenting the students with certificates and publicly recognizing their scholastic achievements.

Parents, faculty and college colleagues, barely able to contain their excitement, were enveloped in fist pumping, cheering and rousing applause as each student proudly walked across the stage of the Performing Arts Centre.

One of their biggest fans was College President Betsy V. Boze who told the students to never stop learning, seizing every available opportunity.

"Be bold and courageous so that when you look back on your life you won't regret the things you didn't do more than the things you did," said President Boze.

Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute graduate and current School of Education major and honour roll student Chevette Black acknowledged the rigours of academia and the sacrifices one must endure in the pursuit of excellence.

To her colleagues she said: "You should all be proud of yourselves; we've made it to this part of our college careers. We're recognized for outstanding scholastic achievement. Our long nights of hard work have paid off. Moving forward, I encourage you to continue your pursuit for excellence."

"First, have a passion for whatever you do; passion will keep you when all else fails. Second, encourage each other; no man is an island and no individual stands alone. Always make an effort to start for the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single footprint."
