Mrs Rubie Nottage Appointed Supreme Court Justice
The College of The Bahamas received the news of Ms Rubie Nottage's appointment as a Justice in the Supreme Court with great delight. As the community in which she practised her craft for the last seven years we know that she is eminently qualified for the position and that she will bring to it her trademark: meticulous attention to detail and broad understanding of the workings of the law.
Mrs Nottage's relationship with The College of The Bahamas began in the early 1990s when she studied for a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in a programme that involved a partnership between the Templeton Institute and The College.
Subsequently in 2001, she joined The College as a faculty member lecturing in the University of the West Indies/College of The Bahamas LL.B. Law Programme. In this environment she exhibited a profound knowledge of the law of the Caribbean, Family Law and Alternate Dispute Resolution among other topics.
In 2004 she joined the Senior Administrative Team of The College initially as Vice President & General Counsel, and later as Secretary General and Council Secretary. In these positions Mrs. Nottage displayed her intellect, her legal acumen and her exemplary judgment in assessing the various situations requiring her attention. Providing timely and efficient legal services, she worked collaboratively with The College Council, managed the corporate and legal information assets of the institution and developed a system for the orderly retention of records.
Among other duties which she has always carried out with proficiency and charm have been the oversight of all ceremonial affairs and protocol and the organization of all College elections.
Although her departure will create a great void, we know that Mrs Nottage will fill an important national role. She is exceedingly well qualified for her new post having been the fourth woman to be called to the Bar of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and probably the first Bahamian woman to obtain a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree. She has since gained a second LL.M (Distinction) in Canon Law, which she earned from Cardiff University in 2003. For the past 38 years as a practicing lawyer, Mrs. Nottage has specialized in Property Law, Family Law and Trusts and Company Law and has represented clients in cases ranging from election petitions to huge probate claims. She is a member of the International Bar Association and the International Society of Family Law.
In addition to her prominence in the legal field, Mrs. Nottage is highly respected in the upper echelons of the Anglican Church serving for 22 years as the Vice Chancellor and seven years as Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. In January 2007 the Archbishop of Canterbury nominated her to become a member of the Anglican Communion Covenant Design Group, an international committee with the mandate to produce an Anglican Covenant for all members of the Anglican Communion.
Mrs. Nottage has always shown that she not only respects justice but loves to see it administered in a fair and unprejudiced manner. She has demonstrated an unswerving devotion to duty while at The College of The Bahamas and we are sure she will bring that same devotion to her new position.
In addition, she has delighted us with her wit and educated us with her breadth of knowledge. We shall miss her dearly but we also celebrate this moment when one of our own meets yet another challenge in service to our country.
Meanwhile, we shall also be reviewing what next steps we will take to ensure that the work of the College that Ms. Nottage was doing will carry on without disruption and will communicate further on this in a short while.
