Mention the name Edith Louise Lady Turnquest and for many people it stirs memories of a Bahamian who served her country with honour. But for the Turnquest family, the nostalgia is about a distinguished matriarch renowned for her social graces and whose love and passion for the culinary arts was legendary.
Now, through a very generous gift from The Lyford Cay Foundation Inc. to The College of The Bahamas, Lady Turnquest's love for exquisite cuisine will be memorialized in a special endowment to fund scholarships at The College.
On Thursday, April 14th, Lyford Cay Foundation Inc. President Mr. Stuart Ray presented a $100,000 cheque to The College for the Edith Louise Lady Turnquest Culinary Endowment. The endowment will fund scholarships for full time culinary students enrolled at The College in the Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute with the highest demonstrated ability and academic achievement.
"The Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute is the leading institution in the Caribbean working to develop professionals in the hospitality industry and it plays an important role in the economic development of the country. Unfortunately, it has been an area where there has been underinvestment in terms of the availability of financial aid for students. The Edith Louise Lady Turnquest Scholarship Fund will begin to rectify this omission and I hope that the establishment of this fund will mark the beginning of more scholarships in the culinary arts," he noted.
"…I would have loved to have grown up in the Turnquest family and to have benefited from Lady Turnquest's wonderful cooking. This scholarship fund will enable Lady Turnquest's extended Bahamian family to benefit from her love of food and to share that love with the millions of visitors to this wonderful country."

Over the years, the Lyford Cay Foundation Inc. has established a distinct legacy of supporting the advancement of education, especially through philanthropy that has impacted the lives of many college students.
College President Dr. Betsy V. Boze lauded the Foundation's commitment.
"This keen commitment on the part of the Foundation has been matched by an equally profound mission to cultivate the kind of fruitful partnerships to achieve this goal," she said. "We at The College of The Bahamas have been fortunate to have the support of the Lyford Cay Foundation in extending access to higher education to deserving Bahamians from all walks of life; Bahamians who have continued The College's tradition of excellence and who have used their creativity, imagination and determination to help build a thriving and resilient nation."
President Boze added that each gift from the Lyford Cay Foundation Inc. has symbolized a firm belief in education and confidence in The College to provide high quality programmes and leadership.
The announcement of the endowment was a special honour for former Governor General Sir Orville Turnquest and his family. As this particular endowment also allows for additional parties to contribute to the capital, increasing the potential for more scholarships to be funded, Sir Orville vowed to faithfully promote it and generate support for student scholarships in memory of his dear wife.
"My wife loved the kitchen and she was a wonderful culinary artist. We shall see to it that the country knows about this endowment and keeps it alive," Sir Orville said.

The announcement of the endowment happened in the foyer of the celebrated Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute, the same venue where there was an exquisite cornucopia of pastries made by students for the practical component of their final examinations. Those who attended were thoroughly impressed with the students' level of culinary skill and creativity.
