The School of English Studies Announces
the Publication of LUCAYOS

The School of English Studies is pleased to announce the publication of LUCAYOS, a biennial peer reviewed journal of literature, culture and the arts. The word Lucayos is the name of both the original people of The Bahamas and the islands themselves and, as such, it indicates a harmonious coexistence between the people and their surroundings.

In their introduction, the editors, Marjorie Brooks-Jones, Daphne Grace and Ian Strachan, state that they "hope to preserve the concord inherent in the connecting of creative and artistic expressions of cultural and social life that the name 'Lucayos' suggests while at the same time inculcating a critical regional cultural awareness."

The first edition of LUCAYOS is dedicated to The College’s hosting of the 26th West Indian Literature Conference in March 2007 when scholars from various Caribbean nations, Great Britain and the United States gathered to discuss the theme of 'Horizons'. At that conference, President Janyne M Hodder challenged the attendees "to see a world of possibilities and promise, suggesting that perceived borders do not limit the field of our endeavours".

One of the editors, Daphne Grace from the Northern Bahamas Campus, features in the journal as does Bahamian Angelique Nixon who has just been accepted by New York University for post doctoral studies. They both presented papers at the West Indian Literature Conference.

Future editions of LUCAYOS will highlight Bahamian and Caribbean writers, scholars and artists and will maintain an appreciation of local and international culture.

This addition to The College's publications is further evidence that we are increasingly involved in research of a scholarly nature as we transition into the University of The Bahamas. The editors expect that the next issue of the journal will be a University of The Bahamas publication.
