Parents' Evening 2010
President of The College, Dr. Earla Carey-Baines shares a COB update about the College's capital projects with parents.
17 August 2010
The Performing Arts Centre was packed with parents almost as excited as their children, as they gathered for Parents' Evening. The evening was hosted by Renbert Mortimer, Public Relations Assistant for the College of The Bahamas Union of Students (COBUS). Mr. Mortimer engaged the parents in cheering for COB and shared his personal experiences as a 4th year student at The College. He told the parents that, "your students will be some of the first to enter and study in the new library, they will have the opportunity to study in the SIS [Small Island Sustainability] programme." He went on to thank parents for choosing the College and assured them that it was the best decision for their children.
President Dr. Earla-Carey welcomed parents and shared updates on The College's capital projects with them. She also spoke about The College's vibrant Study Abroad programme, which was certainly of interest to many parents. "This semester, thanks to the Lyford Cay Foundation and the Canadian government, 4 students will travel to universities abroad: Dalhousie, Brock, St. Mary's and the University of Prince Edward Island. In the spring, thanks to Scotiabank Bahamas Ltd, Lyford Cay Foundation and the Canadian government, 3 students will participate at Ohio State, Dalhousie and Brock."
The president also shared news about new campus food services, saying that, "We are in the process of finalizing food services for this campus, the Oakes Field Campus and the Grovesnor Close Campus near the Princess Margaret Hospital. By spring students should be able to purchase food on campus." This news was well received by parents as food services have not been available on campus since a popular franchise moved out of the cafeteria space in 2008.
Antonio Butler, President of COBUS, shared the reality of being a student at The College and told the parents a little about what their reality as parents of a College kid would be. "The College of The Bahamas is a good start and it can be a good finish for young students trying to attain degrees in higher education. During your child's stay here they will develop relationships with other students from all over the Bahamas. Your child will also mature even more, as they will come to the realization that they are their own man or woman here at college. No one, not even parents will be able to keep tabs on them as they would like to. Parents, guess what? You cannot even collect your child's grades any more. If your child does not want to go to class, no one will force them to."
Registrar, Dr. Danny Davis spoke about the advisement and registration process and the evening ended with a skit, put on by COBUS members and College students.
Classes for the new and returning students begin on August 23rd.
