A highly regarded and loyal corporate donor to The College of The Bahamas, RBC Royal Bank of Canada has once again demonstrated its extraordinary leadership in supporting higher learning and by extension the development of a resilient, dynamic and prosperous nation.
The bank recently donated $10,000 to The College in support of the institution's aim of inspiring Bahamians to pursue higher education. The gift supported The College's phenomenal Open House held on Friday, April 8th at the Oakes Field campus.
"RBC is committed to the long-term continued growth and development of The College of The Bahamas. We believe that events such as the Open House provided a unique opportunity for the community, especially the students to learn more about our country's leading tertiary institution," said Mr. Nathaniel Beneby, Jr., President and Country Head, RBC Royal Bank, Bahamas.
College President Dr. Betsy V. Boze expressed her gratitude for RBC's generous donation.
"We are so appreciative of RBC's continued support of The College. As we transition towards securing university status, we are pleased that RBC remains committed to The College of The Bahamas and to providing opportunities for all Bahamians to receive an exceptional tertiary education right at home," said President Boze.
Hundreds of students from public and private schools were fully immersed in college life on the Oakes Field campus of The College of The Bahamas on Friday, April 8th.
The Open House, held under the theme, "A College Education is Within Your Reach" attracted hundreds of primary, junior and senior high school students to The College's thriving urban campus and allowed them to experience college life at its finest.
Many of the students - aspiring physicians, educators and aviators - took full advantage of the opportunity to find out about The College's entry requirements, academic and athletics programmes and an explore various clubs and organizations.
It was precisely the kind of interest and commitment that was envisioned when the notion of holding the Open House was conceived. As an institution driven by a mission with broad national impact, The College's engagement and outreach efforts, especially those that involve future leaders, are critical. The partnership with RBC Royal Bank is indicative of the support being cultivated from external partners in order to achieve the goal of supporting and driving national development.
"We are extremely pleased that so many students were here from schools around New Providence. It was especially exciting that many schools brought their students to campus to participate during the band competition, to enjoy our student art displays and learn about our student research while also finding out more about who we are as an institution," said Mr. Valdez Russell, co-chair of the committee that organized the Open House.
The shool band competition was one of the highlights of the Open House. Six schools participated, but C.V.Bethel walked away with the 1st prize of $1,000. Government High School placed 2nd and C.R. Walker placed 3rd.
Activities included guided campus tours, a school band competition, exhibition soccer and basketball games and a full showcase of various academic units from the schools of Education to Nursing and Allied Health Services. In a splendid display of musical skill, CV Bethel High School won the band competition, seizing the $1,000 prize for its music department.
Additionally, school administrators were engaged in a special "Cookies and Cousellors" information sharing session, giving them key information about the institution, its exceptional academic programmes and financial aid options that are available to put the goal of a college education with the reach of many more persons.
The Open House was the last in a series of events that The College hosted to mark the Investiture of Dr. Betsy V. Boze as President and happened on the same day that the highly celebrated $28 million Harry C. Moore Library & Information Centre was officially opened by Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham.
