Many Bahamians have great business ideas but may not have the tools, resources and know-how to realise their dreams of successful business ownership. To change this, starting in 2007, The College of The Bahamas and the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation (BAIC) partnered to run a business empowerment seminar series for existing and prospective entrepreneurs wanting to gain knowledge about Small Business Management.

"Increasing entrepreneurship and business ownership are fundamental to economic empowerment for Bahamians," stated BAIC Deputy General Manager Don Major. "Running a business takes not only a good idea and hard work, but also education in the proven and tested principles and practices that will bring success. This seminar series is aimed at educating the public in these important strategies."

This academic year The Royal Bank of Canada, already committed to small business education and keen to extend its reach in the field, has joined the fruitful partnership. The seminar series has been renamed the "RBC Small Business Programme" in recognition of RBC's generous gift to The College earlier this year and its continued commitment to entrepreneurship.

College of The Bahamas President Janyne M Hodder explained, "In January The College was the recipient of a generous $1 million donation from RBC towards the building of our new Graduate Business Centre. As part of that wonderful donation, we decided to name this important programme in small business for RBC, and we very proud to announce this new partnership."

George Roach, Vice-President Commercial Banking, RBC, spoke of the advantages for small business owners to be gained from such a programme as it would provide a plan of action and a scheme to follow for success in an entrepreneurial venture.

Jerome Pinder, Manager of Small Business Division, RBC, explained that there is a very high failure rate among small businesses and most fail "because the owners are not prepared for the many problems they are likely to face." He went on to say that he will be presenting at one of the evening sessions and will address the subject of what banks want to hear when a small business person comes asking for financial assistance.

The RBC Small Business Programme, which is free to the public, kicks off on Thursday October 9, at 7.00 p.m. and will run every Thursday, for 6 weeks until November 13. The programme seminars will take place each week at The College's Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute's Lecture Theatre at the Tourism Training Centre on Thompson Blvd. Last year, the seminars attracted as many as 70 participants on a given evening. As in the past, the focus and purpose of the seminar offerings will be to educate small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs in the best practices of running a business. Participants can look forward to receiving sound advice and proven strategies presented by industry professionals and business academics from The College of The Bahamas. This seminar will equip participants with specialised knowledge to be successful in their small business endeavours. Another series is planned for the Spring semester 2009 which will run for 12 weeks.

The RBC Small Business Programme will cover the following topics: Importance of Marketing & Customer Service; Developing your Business Plan; Customs Duties & Concessions; Pricing Strategies for Goods & Services; Agricultural Careers; Marine Resources – preserving a gold mine; Money Management – Roundtable Discussion with Bankers; Increasing Competitiveness in Business; E-Commerce, Doing Business via the Internet; and Anatomy of an Entrepreneur – What does it take to become one?
