Faculty and Student Exchange Agreement
with College of St Benedict, Minnesota

(L to R) Valdez Russell, International Relations Liaison; Dr Linda Davis, Vice-President Research, Graduate Programmes and International Relations; President Janyne M Hodder; Maryann Baenninger, President College of St Benedict; Kolleen Kellom, Vice President College of Saint Benedict; Stuart Lang, Vice President College of Saint Benedict.

This week President Janyne M Hodder met with Maryann Baenninger, President of the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota, to discuss the implementation of study abroad and exchange agreements between The College of The Bahamas and the College of St Benedict.

As The College of The Bahamas moves ever closer to becoming the University of The Bahamas its administrative team is exploring ever more avenues for opportunities to enhance the experiences of its students and to develop the research interests of its faculty. One successful method of achieving both these aims is to establish exchange and study abroad agreements with overseas universities whereby College of The Bahamas students can go abroad to study for a semester or a year but come back to The Bahamas to graduate and faculty members can go to lecture and conduct research at an institution abroad while a professor from that institution comes to The College of The Bahamas in exchange.

The two presidents were joined by administrators from both institutions and talked positively about initiating an agreement that would be mutually beneficial to both parties. Both presidents are optimistic that an agreement will be signed as soon as areas best suited to each institution have been identified.

The College of Saint Benedict has a long history of international education with over 60% of its students studying abroad. Recognized by the Institute for International Education (IIE), Saint Benedict's runs 17 of its own semester-long study abroad programmes, on six different continents. It also has a proud attachment with The Bahamas having held classes on the campus of St Augustine's for almost forty years until the end of the 1990s. There is also a long legacy of Bahamian students studying full time at the Minnesota campus.

President Hodder was delighted with the outcome of the meeting and is looking forward to cementing another exchange/study abroad agreement that will benefit College of The Bahamas students and enrich their further education experience.
