College of The Bahamas Celebrates Staff during the 2010 Staff Day

17 August 2010

Bahamian rhythms from the ever-popular Geno D and Ira Stor's hit song "Inagua is the best kept secret in The Bahamas" filled the Thompson Boulevard campus of The College of The Bahamas during its annual Staff Day 2010 on Tuesday, August 17th.

The delicious scents of fried snappers and peas n' rice with all the typical Bahamian side dishes filled scores of plates during the day-long celebration. Staff members were separated into four teams carrying the names of four past College presidents, Hodder, Smith, Higgs and Bethel. Competition was fierce during tug-o-war, dominoes, basketball, sprint relays and other exciting events held during the afternoon session.

"This year, staff were able to get involved during the sessions that were very informative and interactive. Staff Day gave me a chance to interact with my colleagues and also people from other departments in a casual, neutral setting," said Michael Ford, a new staff member from the Management Information Services Department.

The day was not only fun but also educational, as employees learned about The College of The Bahamas' history and events during its first ever jeopardy styled game "COB IQ" hosted by Ms. Phillipa Moss of the School of English Studies. Staff members also received College updates and developments from the new College President, Dr. Earla Carey-Baines.

"For staff, the start of a new year signals its own set of opportunities and challenges," said Dr. Carey-Baines. "The opportunity to reflect on and change, if necessary, the way you interact with your colleagues and your clients; the opportunity to continue to reflect on the changes that need to be made to improve the services you provide. The new year provides us with yet another opportunity to ensure a work environment that promotes the values of learning, leadership, collaboration, growth and service."

"Improving Workplace Culture Through Team Building" an interactive motivational session was conducted by Ms. Cherrylee Pinder of CP Training and Consulting Services. Staff members learned important tips for financial freedom during RBC/Finco Representative Mr. Lowell Turnquest session on "Saving and Borrowing: Rules of Financial Planning In Times of Economic Uncertainty."

The blazing summer sun did not deter staff members from competing for the coveted prize of the floating trophy and bragging rights. Potato sack, egg and spoon and 50 yard-dash relay races were fierce, as rival teams put their best feet forward.

"Staff Day went surprisingly well, during the planning for the day we [the committee] were not sure how it would be received by staff. The jeopardy segment in the Performing Arts Centre really built team spirit in the morning and it carried over into the afternoon's sporting events and board game activities; staff were involved and engaged," Athletics Director, Mrs. Kimberly Rolle.

COB staff members expressed their satisfaction in the day's events and hope next year's Staff Day would be as enjoyable. For now, as Staff Day 2010 first place winner, team Hodder celebrates their win by 40 points followed by Teams Bethel, Smith and Higgs.
