Student Research Symposium 2010 Call for Abstracts
The Office of Research, Graduate Programmes, & International Relations is calling for the Annual Student Research Symposium, scheduled for March 26th 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the College of The Bahamas, Oakes Field Campus. Details regarding the submission and guidelines are available on line at www.cob.edu.bs or through the Office of Research, Graduate Programmes, & International Relations at npyfrom@cob.edu.bs or via telephone at 302-4455 or 302-4392.
The Student Research Symposium has been established in an effort to expand opportunities for research and creativity in The College of the Bahamas, and to showcase on-going research being conducted by The College of the Bahamas students. It is intended that the Symposium will provide a means for undergraduate students to share their research with members of The College of the Bahamas Community, its national partners, and government and non-government organizations. In addition, a special session will be organized for graduate completing, or having recently completed, requirements for various master's degree programmes being facilitated by The College of the Bahamas in conjunction with international partner institutions.
Students enrolled in any undergraduate degree programme at The College of the Bahamas and/or pursuing a graduate degree being facilitated by The College are invited to participate. To be eligible for the 2010 Symposium, an undergraduate student must be in good standing with The College and must not have graduated before July 2009. Graduate students must be currently enrolled in a programme being facilitated through the Office of Graduate Programmes or must not have graduated before May 2009. If a research project is ongoing and will not be completed by the 26th of March 2010, a research-in-progress summary may be submitted in lieu of an abstract.
- Research that has been presented in another venue is welcome.
- By submitting an abstract, the student agrees to present the research at the Symposium, but may elect not to be included in the competition for Best in Symposium Awards to be judged by a panel to include The College of The Bahamas faculty and staff, the wider community and members from among The College of The Bahamas' local and international partnership listing.
- Final presentations may take the form of a poster presentation, an oral presentation, or a performing/visual arts presentation.
- To assist students in preparing their presentations, workshops will be held in advance of the Symposium on the following topics: utilizing your resources for research, how to write an abstract, how to develop an effective poster, and how to give effective presentations.
- It is expected that Best in Symposium Awards will include grants (cash and/or monetary certificates) for further research, attendance at international conferences, and related research. Best in Symposium Awards will be designated as follows:
- Best in Symposium Undergraduate (Overall)
- Best 100/200 Level Submissions (Undergraduate)
- Best 300/400 Level Submissions (Undergraduate)
- Best in Symposium Graduate (Overall)
- The abstract should be at least 250 words long, but no longer than 300 words and must adhere to the attached guidelines.
Applications will be accepted until 5 pm, Friday, 26th February 2010. No late applications will be accepted.
