Financial Aid

The College of The Bahamas Financial Aid programme is designed to conform with, and relate to the particular needs of Bahamian students at the institution. It is structured to be consistent with the institution's commitment to the principle of equality of access, and has been established to provide financial aid for students who could not otherwise attend College. One dimension of the programme encourages and stimulates the more determined students to excel academically and develop socially.

Generally, financial aid at The College is based on need and/or ability. The Financial Aid programme is divided into four (4) categories:
  1. The Government of The Bahamas: Teacher Education and Nursing Grants

These are normally available to prospective Teacher Education and Nursing students who satisfy established criteria determined by the Ministry of Education and The Ministry of Health respectively.

  2. The Government of The Bahamas National Awards and Bursaries

These awards are available through the Ministries of Education and Youth, Sports and Culture to all qualified students who are not studying in the areas of Teacher Education or Nursing.

  3. The College of The Bahamas Work-Study Award

These are non-repayable grants made at the beginning of each semester directly to students' accounts for tuition purposes only. These funds are for students experiencing financial difficulties. No funds are given to students. In addition, recipients of these awards are required to work in various areas of The College for a period of four (4) hours per week. There is normally no work-study during the summer session. The following are ineligible for this award:

    1. students in the Basic Upgrading & College Prep programmes
    2. students in the LLB and Master's programmes
    3. students on academic probation

  4. Private Scholarships and Bursaries

These are non-repayable grants funded by private individuals, businesses and organisations and normally are awarded to outstanding students in The College based on their overall academic performance. Some of these are awarded on the basis of financial need and also particular areas of study. In addition, the Lyford Cay Foundation and the Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation and The College of The Bahamas Endowment Fund is available to students with the appropriate criteria for financial assistance.

Since the availability of funds for financial aid is limited, no student is normally permitted to be in receipt of more than one scholarship with tuition paid in full, grant or bursary in any one semester.
Criteria for Eligibility
The eligibility requirements for private scholarships, grants or bursaries include:
  1. Must be a full-time Bahamian student
  2. Must possess a minimum GPA of 2.50 or 3.00 depending on the scholarship
  3. Must not be in possession of another award which covers tuition fees
  4. Must submit a minimum of 12 credits per semester
  5. Must demonstrate financial need (proof needed)
  6. Must provide a completed application with all necessary attachments

Housing

Presently at The College of The Bahamas, there is limited on-campus residential space to house students, particularly those students from the Family Islands. However, in the not too distant future, a modern housing complex will be constructed to accommodate New Providence, Family Islands and foreign students who pursue full-time studies at The College. Currently, the housing fee per student for the Fall and Spring Semesters is a one-time deposit of $400.00 which is refundable if conditions are met, and $400.00 per semester. Additionally, the fee for the Summer Session is $200.00.

COB's housing facility is located on Moss Road and College Avenue, a five (5) minute walk from The College's main campus in Oakes Field. It is located in close proximity to a modern supermarket, three (3) of the most popular fast-food eateries as well as several international commercial banks. Other places of importance for students' convenience and comfort include, the Post Office and the Road Traffic Department located in the Clarence Bain Building on Thompson Boulevard and two (2) pharmacies which are situated on Poinciana Drive, immediately opposite the Portia M. Smith Student Services Complex and on Nassau Street, north of the main campus.

Off-campus housing facilities are available throughout the island but, most importantly, they are within close proximity to The College. The Financial Aid & Housing Office operates a listing service for the convenience of students and will assist them in securing suitable accommodations. However, students are responsible for making final agreements with the landlords. Transportation to and from The College is also available as a number of buses operate frequently throughout the community.

Interested students should contact the Financial Aid & Housing Office located on the 2nd floor of the Portia M. Smith Complex at (242) 302-4371 or write to:
